Preparing for Endodontic Root Canal Treatment
ROOT TREATMENT

Root canal treatment (also root canal treatment) is a dental method used to preserve dead or inflamed teeth. The bacteria are removed with special instruments and the function of the tooth is restored. So it doesn’t have to be pulled. A successful root canal treatment can save the tooth for many years or even decades.

A root canal treatment is often the last resort to save a diseased or injured (damaged) tooth. The result can usually be seen over many years. Nowadays nobody has to be afraid of the operation anymore.

Before the dentist carries out the procedure, he/she usually explains the possible risks and consequences. If the dental nerve (pulp) is still active, i.e. not yet dead, a local anesthetic is introduced. The patient does not feel any pain during the root canal treatment. The tooth is now drilled out up to the tooth nerve, the nerve is removed and the individual canals are rinsed with a disinfecting solution. In this way, bacteria that have nested in the walls are eliminated. The doctor clears out the inside of the tooth with small files.

Root canal treatment is really necessary in cases:

  • For tooth root inflammation

If bacteria attack the tooth substance and are not stopped in time, they get inside the tooth and reach the tooth root. The undetected or untreated caries then often leads to inflammation of the tooth root. Root canal treatment can save the diseased tooth.

  • Root canal treatment for dentures

A root canal treatment can also precede the fitting of a crown or dental bridge. If the dentist has to remove a lot of the tooth substance, the tooth pulp is partially or even completely exposed. Bacteria could now easily penetrate and cause inflammation of the tooth root. In order to prevent this possible tooth root inflammation, the dentist often removes the tooth pulp completely. The crown or dental bridge are then secured longer.

DENTAL POST

Endodontically treated teeth should be definitively treated as soon as possible after the end of the root canal treatment. The composite filling is a treatment option. In many cases, however, it is also necessary to insert a post with a core build-up.

One speaks of a post structure (also called post tooth or post crown) when the post and tooth crown are made in one piece. A post build-up can be used if a tooth is severely damaged or destroyed right down to the root and needs to be restored. Your dentist can tell you whether a post build-up, another type of post restoration or a root filling is appropriate to stabilize a tooth in such a way that it can later wear the planned denture (e.g. a partial or full crown).

Tooth root treatments always serve to preserve a deeply damaged tooth. Before the dentist can start building up the stump, he must have removed all decayed or no longer stable tooth substance and any inflammation must have come to a standstill. The definitive dentures are therefore often preceded by a provisional restoration and a waiting period.

Depending on how much tooth substance (enamel, dentine and natural root cement) was lost during the root canal treatment, there are various options for building up the core. If there is still a lot of substance left in the area of the natural tooth crown, for example one or more tooth walls are still standing, it is highly likely that the structure can be anchored or glued to it. A pin supply is then not necessary, only a build-up filling or root filling.

In the case of severe substance loss, a post is often the only way to save the tooth. The root pin can be made of different materials, for example metal, high-performance ceramics, quartz fiber or glass fiber. Root posts made of glass or quartz fibers are as elastic as natural teeth. This reduces the risk of the root breaking later when subjected to severe side and shear loads (also called crunching).

BONDING

During bonding, our dentists apply a plastic material to the tooth, which is permanently fixed with the help of a special “adhesive” and high-energy light. It is then finished and polished – without removing the healthy tooth structure. The bonding technique can also be combined with fillings.

The bonding technique is the first choice, especially for minor corrections to the tooth position and tooth shape of the front teeth: gap closure, tooth lengthening of broken or crunched tooth edges, tooth misalignments, unsightly tooth shapes, combined with fillings, tooth stains and strips.

Specially developed adhesive components ensure decades of permanent and maximum adhesion of the filling material. This procedure is also extremely gentle, since no removal of the tooth substance is necessary.
